WHFI’s Role in Research

The Women’s Health Fitness Institute facilitates collaboration between woman-centered health fitness movement programs and academic researchers. WHFI helps bring these two elements together to explore how movement affects the health and well-being of women, their offspring, families and communities.

WHFI facilitates collaboration in two ways:

• First, we serve as a model for bringing replicable movement programs into the rigorous sphere of scientific research.

Second, we enable research projects and movement programs with compatible goals to work together.

Areas of Interest and WHFI’s Neuro-Immuno-Endocrine Metabolic Maps (NIEM-maps)

WHFI is interested in how movement or exercise affects female physiology and -- in turn -- women’s health status. At present, we are particularly interested in collaborations involving both physiologic and psychosocial issues in women’s health.

The Institute has published NIEM-maps of some physiological processes related to women and exercise.

We seek feedback and input from readers on what is published on our site. We have three goals in relation to these maps:

1. UPDATE as research progresses

2. IDENTIFY topics needing research

3. ADD new maps on additional topics

How to Find a Movement Program for your Research Project

Researchers who want to examine the impact of group or individual exercise, physical activity or movement programming on women’s health may contact WHFI for assistance. The Institute is able to locate reliable programs capable of providing a standardized movement program for use in specified research. Or, if no such program currently exists, WHFI can create a program for the research team that will meet its needs.

Researchers wishing to consult with WHFI on this matter should contact the executive director.

How to Get Your Movement Program into a Research Study

Woman-centered health fitness movement programs that have a long-term safety record, are based on tested physiologic and psychosocial principles (rather than rote methodology), and an hypothesis about measureable outcomes of their program, may be considered for research purposes.

Directors of such programs wishing to consult with WHFI on this matter should contact the executive director.

WHFI’s Human Subjects’ Protection Training Course for Movement Instructors

WHFI has developed a program of training about Human Subject Protection for movement instructors who will have study participants in their classes.

Instructors study key documents such as the Belmont Report, which provides guidelines for dealing with study participants.

In addition, potential programs are required to demonstrate that their class content is safe, consistent and theoretically sound.

Researchers or directors of movement programs that will be participating in research projects may hire WHFI to provide Human Subjects Protection training or to help an institution or program develop their own training program.

Please contact our executive director.

WHFI’s Current Research

WHFI’s initial research project examines mechanisms through which maternal exercise may prevent or treat hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, a contributing factor to the rising prematurity rate in U.S. and world populations.

It is this collaborative undertaking that brought to our attention the need to create WHFI as an entity capable of locating or designing -- as well as implementing -- sustainable evidence-based women-centered health fitness programs for scientific purposes. The research team includes a principle investigator from the Yale University School of Medicine, who is also a volunteer Research Advisor for WHFI, and co-investigators from the Yale University School of Nursing, and from Epidemiology and Public Health, as well as the Executive Director and Research Associate from WHFI.
